So, you’ve decided that you want to redecorate your bathroom, and that includes your floor tiles also. Firstly, you have two decisions to make – what material, and what colour?

Two of the most popular options for bathroom floor tiles are granite and marble, and that is mainly because these are both porous stones, and they don’t stay slippery for long, because of that reason.

How do you separate the two? Well, you’re splitting hairs in many ways, but here are the two of them pitted against each other.

Granite for Bathroom Floor Tiles

We mentioned that granite is a natural stone, and it is also one of the most strongest, if not the most strongest of them all. This means that you are getting durability and a long-lasting choice – you aren’t going to have to worry about replacing your floor tiles, provided you look after them correctly.

Granite is available in countless different colours, patterns, and finishes, and that also means you are getting flexibility – pick something which is going to ‘go’ with other colours, e.g. a flexible option, and you won’t have to worry about replacing your floor tiles too early.

Granite is of course porous, as we mentioned, and that has two sides, an up and a down – the up side is that standing water is not going to remain on top of the tiles, because it will be absorbed; the down side of that is that your tiles will need maintenance, in the form of sealing at least annually, to avoid damage. Having said that, granite is extremely easy to clean, with just warm, soapy water and a soft cloth.

Marble for Bathroom Floor Tiles

Marble is very similar to granite in some ways, but totally differs in others. Whilst marble is a natural stone, and a strong one at that, it isn’t as strong as granite, and will require a little more care and attention compared to the other option. The myth that marble is fragile however is totally unfounded!

Marble is available in many other colours than you might realise, and it’s not just about black and white! This gives you another decision to make, after you’ve decided between the two materials!

Of course, marble is porous, just like granite, but this particular stone will require a little more in the way of sealing than granite will. In terms of cleaning ease however, the method is exactly the same as with granite, so no worries about specialist cleaning methods coming into play.

Which one wins? It’s a really narrow margin, if you can find a clear winner at all. Many people tend to go for granite floor tiles in their bathroom, simply because they are that little bit more hard-wearing, compared to marble. Having said that, there is no reason why you can’t have marble on your bathroom floor and enjoy its opulent and timeless appearance for many years to come.

Whichever option you go for, you need to think very carefully about the colour you’re going to choose in the end. Checking out the range in the showroom is the best bet, because different colours can react differently to various lights, such as artificial or natural. Shopping around is another tip, because you may be able to grab a bargain, especially at traditional sale times, such as New Year or Black Friday.
